The Gotthard motorway and the Gotthard road tunnel take you into Ticino. On public holidays and in the school holidays traffic builds up before the tunnel; then we allow more time or take the San Bernardino route.
We keep an eye on the traffic before departure and on the way, and choose the route accordingly. For flights from Zurich we plan the return with a generous buffer.
Hotels line the lakefront between Paradiso and Castagnola and the slopes above. The centre around Piazza della Riforma is pedestrianised; we stop on the Riva or right in your hotel's driveway.
Lugano has the mildest climate in Switzerland: camellias and magnolias bloom as early as March. In summer the LongLake Festival and Estival Jazz play in the open air. Easter, Whitsun and the summer holidays bring heavy traffic before the Gotthard — then we plan with extra time.
