The A1 motorway takes you to Bern in about an hour and a half. For meetings with the federal administration, embassies and associations we allow a buffer; your chauffeur can wait and drive you on afterwards.
For several meetings on the same day it is best to book the chauffeur by the hour — he takes you from meeting to meeting and waits in between.
The old town on the loop of the Aare has narrow lanes and long arcades; through traffic is partly restricted. We drive right to the Bellevue Palace next to the Federal Palace; for meetings in the old town we stop at the nearest possible point and wait nearby.
Parliament sits in Bern four times a year; during session weeks hotels and diaries are packed. On the fourth Monday of November the Zibelemärit fills the old town with onion braids, and in July the Gurtenfestival takes over the city's local mountain.
